History
Yellow River drumming comes from the Northern Province of Shanxi. Shanxi is the birthplace of the drum and the gong. The people of Shanxi love to play the drums almost as much as the Cantonese love to lion dance. For thousands of years, the natives of Shanxi would celebrate the Harvest and the change of winter to spring along the sandy banks of the Yellow River. In Shanxi, hundreds of drummers still line the banks of the Yellow River to celebrate with the drums. The people of Shanxi lived a hard life with droughts and hot summers. The drum team not only performed during celebrations, but also to lift the morale of the natives when life got tough. This style of drumming dates back to the Tang Dynasty (600-900 A.D.)
The Yellow River is not the longest river in China, but it is a wild one. The path and direction of the Yellow River is always changing. It has been almost impossible to dam this river, let alone build bridges across it. There is a yellow sand or loam that clearly identifies the Yellow River. The Yellow River is a famous symbol representing the spirit and determination of the Chinese people.
