Troupe Overview

The Yellow River Drummers are a group dedicated to preserving the traditional performing arts of China. Based in San Francisco, the Yellow River Drummers have troupe members from throughout the San Francisco Bay Area region. The group has received support from the Chinese Performing Arts Foundation.

Layton Doung, Artistic Director, founded the Yellow River Drummers in 1996. The drum group had its beginnings as a kids only lion dance group in 1991. In 1993, Layton organized the first group of Chinese stiltwalkers to perform in the Chinese New Year Parade. The Yellow River Drummers, which has grown from the initial six members to over thirty members, has performed every year since 1996 in the world-renowned San Francisco Chinese New Year Parade. The group is the only group of its kind outside of China and Hong Kong.

The drummers have received training from master choreographer Professor David Chen, Beijing-trained percussionists Mr. Hai Pu and Mr. Randy Wang Wei. Professor Chen, a choreographer originally from Shanghai, China, is a leading South Bay dance instructor. Mr. Hai Pu is a second generation percussionist from Beijing whose father is the renowned Li Zheu Qui. Mr. Randy Wang Wei, who has trained and studied in China and Germany, is an active member of the Chinese performing group, Melody of China.
